Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed drivers at Monterey Regional Airport (the closest commercial airport to Carmel-by-the-Sea) sometimes approach arrivals claiming official shuttle status to Carmel, charging premium rates without proper permits. Verify any driver has official airport transportation credentials displayed and use the designated taxi/shuttle stands rather than accepting unsolicited offers.
Some Carmel-area private car services booked through third-party websites advertise 'flat rates' to the airport but add unexpected 'Carmel tourism surcharge' or 'coastal access fees' at drop-off. Confirm the total fare including all fees when booking and get written confirmation before travel.
Rideshare drivers occasionally cancel trips from Monterey Airport to Carmel-by-the-Sea after accepting, hoping to force rebooking at increase pricing during peak arrival times. Have a backup transportation option ready and report cancellations through the app rather than accepting off-platform arrangements.
